We've encountered many homeowners who are under Homeowner Associations' restrictions, most often requiring a cedar shake roof. These covenants were written prior to the abundance of high quality products that are available today. We have been successful at overturning many of these associations into accepting alternate, but still beautiful roofing materials. New cedar shakes make for a gorgeous option, but it is one of the most expensive roofing materials today, and certainly not the best choice for durability. The wood is not of the same quality as it was years ago, thus the lifespan of a cedar shake roof will be less than 20 years. Wood rot, rodent nests, accumulating leaves and needles are frequent problems.
