HardiPlank®, a composition of fibers and cement, created as an alternative to traditional sidings, had the initial expectation of being a lifetime or almost lifetime, durable siding. At first look, it would seem that they hit the mark. At closer inspection, we are seeing failures that range from delamination, to warping, cracking and chipping. While unfortunate, we have already replaced the siding for many homeowners who had hoped for and were indeed led to believe HardiPlank® would give a lifetime of no maintenance. With extra care and some steps that go above and beyond the typical installation, HardiPlank® can be made to perform better; however, installations where shortcuts have been taken lead to sure failure. Annually changing installation instructions and warranties is a sure sign to us that there are indeed issues that have come to their attention with its durability and performance.
We can take the steps mentioned above to ensure for a more satisfactory and lasting installation. As a final word, we would highly recommend coating with CHIC Liquid Vinyl to waterproof the siding. Afterall, it is constructed of FIBERcement. Cuts in the product lead to moisture retention in the siding.
